December 2014 – Featured in the book parkrun: more than just a run in the park by Debra Bourne

parkrun has also led directly to the development of new running clubs. On quite a large scale, this has included the development of five30runners. This running club started at Newy parkrun and was founded in September 2012 by Garry ‘Guru’ Wells, who is now the Event Director at Blackbutt. It originated to enable runners in the Newcastle, New South Wales area, who were completing parkrun in about thirty minutes, to engage with each other between Saturday mornings. Garry had the idea while pacing a friend to a 32 minute finish, particularly when he realised, looking at the statistics, that about 25-33% of runners were finishing the 5K in over thirty minutes and many, it appeared, were aiming to get under that time. By May 2014, five30runners had members all over Australia and one in the USA. It is also welcoming to runners of all speeds, whether around the thirty minute mark for the 5K or faster or slower. The five30runners Facebook page is very active, with everyone supporting one another, meeting up at races and getting together for parkrun tourism trips to various venues. – Debra Bourne, parkrun: more than just a run in the park

November 2014 – Cancer Council Newcastle Relay for Life, Hunter Sports Centre, Glendale

  • Team Captain of five30runners
  • five30runners ran over 530km and raised over $7,000
  • I was co-awarded the Spirit of Relay Award for going “above and beyond the call of duty in the run up to the 2014 Newcastle / Lake Macquarie Relay” and “for being a motivational team captain”
  • I also received the Most Laps by a Male award for running 139 laps, or 55 km

July 2014 – established untapped runners

  • I established untapped runners to provide coaching aimed at runners completing their first half marathon, moving from 5km to 10km, improving times over 10km to half marathon, and preparing runners for The North Face 50km (now Ultra-Trail Australia)

August 2013 – Inaugural Event Director at Blackbutt parkrun

  • Led the team that successfully set up Australia’s 38th parkrun event
  • Set a world record parkrun launch (538 runners)
  • Received an award for service to Blackbutt parkrun from the General Manager of parkrun Australia

September 2012 – founded five30runners

  • I established this running club with the tagline “five kms in 30 minutes, run it”
  • From a start of 3 runners at Newy parkrun, we now have over 1800 members in our Facebook group
  • We are the fourth largest running club registered with parkrun Australia, with 644 members (behind Running Mums Australia, the Zoolanders, and Intraining)
